Desde 1995, un grupo de investigación en filosofía del lenguaje se ha reunido de manera continua en el Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas (UNAM), en ocasiones incorporando a lingüistas, y financiado por diversos proyectos de investigación. Asimismo, a partir del 2003 se conformó un grupo de investigación en filosofía de la mente y ciencia cognitiva con la participación ocasional de psicólogos cognitivos. Sin embargo, es en el 2005, bajo los auspicios del macroproyecto Lenguaje, comunicación e identidad, que se conforma de manera formal un grupo interdisciplinario de investigación sobre el lenguaje, incorporando principalmente a lingüistas, psicólogos y filósofos. Hoy en día las investigaciones de este grupo son financiadas por dos proyectos, Conacyt U83004 Lenguaje y cognición (responsable: Maite Ezcurdia) y DGAPA IN401909 Significado y comunicación (responsable: Maite Ezcurdia; corresponsable: Mario Gómez Torrente)
Las actividades regulares del grupo se organizan en torno a tres reuniones de discusión: el seminario de filosofía del lenguaje, el seminario de ciencia cognitiva, y el seminario interdisciplinario en el que participan filósofos, lingüistas y psicólogos.
