This two-session crash course provides an overview of the key methodological and conceptual challenges in empirical research on consciousness. The first session focuses on the neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs), addressing the difficulties of distinguishing true neural correlates of consciousness from mere prerequisites and other statistical correlates. It explores both the temporal and spatial dimensions of NCC research, emphasizing that many methodological challenges remain unresolved. The second session examines how findings from NCC research contribute to the development of systematic, empirically grounded theories of consciousness. It surveys the fundamental types of such theories, with particular attention to the distinction between one-factor and two-factor theories, as well as the possibility of multiple, equally valid theories of consciousness.
