This two-session course examines the dual role of language in inquiry, as an object of scientific study and as the performative medium through which science itself is constructed. Integrating the philosophy of language with the philosophy of science/linguistics, the first part explores how theories of meaning and representation shape linguistic analysis. It aims to clarify what kind of science linguistics is and what it claims to explain. The second part focuses on the intersection of pragmatics and speech act theory, treating scientific claims as norm-governed actions that generate commitments, authority and institutional effects.
