Soy especialista en el estudio de los racismos y antirracismos contemporáneos y sus intersecciones con los saberes científicos y las tecnologías genómicas, visuales y digitales. Mi trabajo se sitúa entre los estudios de ciencia y tecnología, los estudios críticos de raza y las epistemologías feministas interseccionales, y se articula alrededor de tres hilos conductores: tecnologías y discursos científicos; cuerpos e identidades; y poder y desigualdades sociales. De modo general, busco entender cómo las tecnologías emergentes llegan a reproducir las estructuras de opresión, y cómo podrían, en cambio, contribuir a las luchas globales e interseccionales por la justicia social.

Cuento con licenciatura en Lenguas Modernas (2007) y maestría en Estudios Latinoamericanos (2012) de la Universidad de Cambridge en Reino Unido. De 2012 a 2015 fui investigadora doctoral Marie Skłodowska-Curie del proyecto EUROTAST (“Exploring the History, Archaeology, and New Genetics of the Transatlantic Slave Trade”, financiado por la European Research Council). Me titulé del doctorado en Antropología Social y Etnología de la EHESS–París con mención honorífica (2016), defendiendo una tesis sobre los usos sociopolíticos de las pruebas genéticas de ancestría en dos sociedades pos-esclavistas: Brasil y Estados Unidos. Los resultados de mi investigación doctoral están publicados en mi primera monografía, Permanent Markers: Race, Ancestry, and the Body After the Genome (University of North Carolina Press, 2022).

Cofundé y fui investigadora posdoctoral (Universidad de Islandia) del proyecto CitiGen (“Identity, Citizenship and Nationhood in the Post-Genome Era”, 2016-19), el cual recibió €1.2m en apoyo de Humanities in the European Research Area. Entre 2017 y 2019 fui integrante de la red de investigación “Circulations et métamorphoses du racisme et de l’antiracisme”, organizada entre la EHESS-París y la Universidad de Kioto. De 2019 a 2024 fui beneficiaria de una British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship en la Universidad de Cambridge con un proyecto sobre las representaciones del color de la piel en las artes visuales y las ciencias sociales en México. En 2024 me incorporé al Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas como Investigadora Titular "A" de Tiempo Completo y en 2026 recibí el reconocimiento de Investigador Nacional Nivel I en el SNII. Mi actual programa de investigación se enfoca en la ética de los generadores de imágenes de inteligencia artificial y su potencial para amplificar formas de opresión epistémica en las sociedades latinoamericanas.

Más allá de mis actividades de investigación, imparto clases en el Posgrado en Filosofía de la Ciencia y el Colegio de Filosofía de la UNAM. entre 2017 y 2023 fui docente en la Universidad de Cambridge, donde dirigí varias tesis de posgrado en Estudios Latinoamericanos y Estudios de Género, y coordiné la asignatura “Race, Racisms, and Antiracisms in Latin America” a nivel de maestría. Desde 2017 colaboro con miembros del Seminario Universitario sobre Racismo y Xenofobia (SURXE) de la UNAM como docente y asesora en el diplomado “Racismo y xenofobia vistos desde México”. He sido ponente invitada en eventos académicos y de divulgación en Reino Unido, Francia, Japón, Alemania, Australia entre otros países y mi trabajo ha aparecido en numerosos programas de radio, podcasts, documentales y artículos de prensa.

I study contemporary racisms and antiracisms at the interface between scientific knowledge production and social uses of genomic, visual, and digital technologies. My work is situated at the intersections between science and technology studies, critical race studies, and intersectional feminist epistemologies, and follows three main threads: technology and scientific discourse; bodies and identities; and power and social inequalities. Broadly speaking, my work aims to understand how emerging technologies stand to reproduce structures of oppression, and to propose how they could instead contribute to global struggles for social justice.

I hold a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages (2007) and an MPhil in Latin American Studies (2012) from the University of Cambridge, UK. From 2012 to 2015 I was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie early-stage researcher of the EUROTAST project (“Exploring the History, Archaeology, and New Genetics of the Transatlantic Slave Trade”, funded by the European Research Council). I received my PhD with distinction in Social Anthropology and Ethnology from the EHESS-Paris (2016) for my thesis on the sociopolitical uses of DNA ancestry tests in two post-slavery societies: Brazil and the United States. The results of my doctoral research are published in my first monograph, Permanent Markers: Race, Ancestry, and the Body After the Genome (University of North Carolina Press, 2022).

I cofounded and was a postdoctoral research associate (University of Iceland) of the CitiGen project (“Identity, Citizenship and Nationhood in the Post-Genome Era”, 2016-19), which received €1.2m in support from Humanities in the European Research Area. Between 2017 and 2019 I was a member of the research network “Circulations et métamorphoses du racisme et de l’antiracisme”, organised jointly by the EHESS-Paris and the University of Kyoto. From 2019 to 2024 I held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, for my project on representations of skin colour in the visual arts and social sciences in Mexico. In 2024 I was appointed to the UNAM’s Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas at the level of Investigadora Titular "A" de Tiempo Completo (Assistant Professor, full-time), and in 2026 I became a member of the Mexican National System of Researchers (Level 1). My current research programme focuses on the ethics of AI text-to-image generators and their potential to amplify forms of epistemic oppression in Latin American societies.

In addition to my research activities, I teach classes at the UNAM's Posgraduate programme in Philosophy of Science and College of Philosophy. Between 2017 and 2023 I was a teaching associate at the University of Cambridge, where I supervised various postgraduate dissertations in Latin American Studies and Gender Studies, and coordinated the MPhil module “Race, Racisms, and Antiracisms in Latin America”. Since 2017 I have collaborated with members of the UNAM’s Seminario Universitario sobre Racismo y Xenofobia (SURXE) as a teacher and tutor for the diploma course “Racismo y xenofobia vistos desde México”. I have been an invited speaker at academic and public events in the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Germany, Australia, among other countries, and my work has been featured in numerous radio programmes, podcasts, documentaries, and press articles.
