Resumen
Most diversity talk is focused on identity diversity. For example, when we consider a representative sample of the population, we want that representative sample to be sufficiently diverse as it pertains to properties like gender, age, sexuality, religion and race. In contrast, when sociologists, psychologists, and philosophers talk about the epistemic benefits of diverse groups, they often appeal to cognitive or functional diversity (i.e. diversity of perspectives and skills) rather than identity diversity. So insofar as we are solely interested in the epistemic value of diversity, what type of diversity should we strive for and focus on? Should we strive primarily for functional diversity or can there be any purely epistemic reasons to focus on identity diversity? In this paper, I explore some ways of arguing for the claim that we should sometimes, even from the purely epistemic point of view, focus on identity diversity.
